GUILLOTINES
Walk from Sunnyside.
Guillotines is a right-hand rock bottom break suited to advanced surfers only. It breaks only sometimes, but when it does it delivers a powerful, hollow tube under 50 metres long. The wave has an epic quality rating, and the hazards are real: urchins, rocks, rips, and sharks are all part of the deal here.
When it does break, the crowd is thin, which is about the only thing that makes it approachable. Still, this is a wave strictly for experienced surfers. The rocks, rips, urchins, and sharks leave no room for error, and the tube is described as seriously gnarly. -

BAWLEY POINT
Walk from Sunnyside
Bawley Point is a right-hand reef break suited to intermediate surfers. It’s a world class right over coral reef that works on all tides and picks up most swell directions except south, when there’s too much current and the wave loses its shape. It breaks short, under 50m, and it’s rideable both small and on 8ft plus days. Push it past 8-10ft and it shuts down, though that’s when Guillotines next door starts to fire. Summer cyclone swells are the standout time here.
The inside section is a lot tamer and beginners can get waves there when it’s small. Out on the main peak you’re on a shallow reef with rips and undertow, rocks and urchins, so don’t paddle out there on your first few surfs. There’s also localism, so give the locals their waves and keep it mellow in the water.

GANNET POINT
Short 3 min drive Sunnyside to Gannet Beach
Gannet Point is a left and right rock break suited to intermediate surfers. It picks up swell very consistently and works at all tides. The spot really comes alive on a big swell, but it still gets reasonable size even when conditions are small elsewhere. The right is the main event: when it’s on, you can get a long ride all the way to the point. The left is shorter and can be over quickly. Bring a rock-friendly board and watch your feet on the entry and exit.
The lineup is usually empty, with most surfers heading to Guillotines or Bawley Point instead. When swell is hard to find anywhere else, Gannet Point tends to still be picking something up, making it a reliable option on those flat-looking days.
